7 Security Threats to Factories
Factories have a considerable amount risk factors to consider when implementing security on sites. Several layers must be setup to effectively secure a site. Factories are reporting more security incidents especially high profile ones in the media.
1. Poor Training
Poor training and lack of awareness is the number one risk to any organization. Security personnel that do not have knowledge or experience in their position can have disastrous effects on operations.
General employees who also lack basic security awareness may not question someone who bypasses basic security policies i.e. tailgating behind an employee.
2. Criminal Threats
Individuals or criminal syndicates may target organizations for their value that can be gained either monetary or other values. If they can breach the site with relative ease, it will be more preferable versus a site with more apparent security.
A layered security approach combined with deterrence methods can greatly reduce the effectiveness of attacks and may prevent opportunistic attackers.
3. Unauthorized Access
Unauthorized personnel can cause major problems on your site whether accidentally or they bypass security layers via some other method. Sensitive areas can be comprised as a result of poor access control.
4. Outdated Facilities
Factories that were constructed decades ago simply don’t have the infrastructure or technological innovations of today. They are at increased risk for high numbers of vulnerabilities that can be exploited.
Risk assessments, audits, and penetration tests can help identify, evaluate and improve older sites.
5. Technological Threats
As security evolves technological innovations open new possibilities for security operations. This also creates opportunities for new threats. Advanced access control systems, employee tracking, smart CCTV, drones, autonomous vehicles etc. should all be assessed thoroughly before implementation.
6. Poor Resource Allocation
Limited resources can reduce effectiveness of security 0perations. For example, reducing the number of security staff in favor of budget could overwork existing staff and reduce their ability to enforce security policies causing a security incident.
7. Inside Threats
Personnel who have direct access to facility if not managed properly can turn malicious or assist others to commit a malicious act. Intellectual property or trade secrets are at significantly higher risk by insider threats due to their direct access. Proper oversight and effective employee security policies can mitigate this.
