Safety & Security Bridging the Gap
Safety & Security Bridging the Gap
In Vietnam today, most private security providers offer only alternate versions of one service. That being manned, uniformed security. They secure gates, factories, businesses, construction sites and parking facilities; stop intruders, permit access and patrol properties. Each service company logs vehicles and persons in and out of a facility. They will normally intervene if there is a problem or disturbance, if they have the proper training. Some provide more, others provide less, but most do not offer full protection.
However, during their patrols, tours and working hours, they fail to provide “full service security.” Why, because they generally focus on the security portion of their duties, and neglect the other side of their duties; Safety.
Total Service
A security guard may report a broken light, if it is an area where they normally patrol, but would not report a strange mechanical sound coming from behind a locked door. They report an open window, but fail to report exposed wiring or an open electrical box. Some would walk past liter on the ground, without picking it up and disposing of it properly. Why, because those items are not “security related” so they ignore them. This is a habit that requires change, as with the opening of more international factories, and businesses, clients are looking for a “Total Security Service”, which includes security AND Safety. Security services and security companies in Vietnam need to address these issues for all clients, not only a selected few.
Safety Vs. Security
Safety Vs. Security – What’s the difference? To some, Safety and Security are one in the same, to others, it is completely different. One way to look at it is this: “Safety is the state of being safe; exemption from hurt or injury; freedom from danger, where as “Security” is the condition of being protected from or not exposed to danger; safety.
Think of an umbrella. This is a common method to understand the differences. The “umbrella” represents “Security”. Each panel would represent a portion of “Safety.” You cannot properly provide “security” without providing each part. Security is only one part of the umbrella, and Safety is another part of it., Along with key elements that make the umbrella fully usable. You would not use an umbrella that is missing a panel, so why use a security provider that doesn’t offer full service protection?
Not Just Protection
In Vietnam, most Security services only deal with “Security” and a limited amount of “Safety”. In today’s climate and the increase of awareness, security providers need to re-think their responsibilities. We can no longer just “Protect” from outside activities, but be aware, and make our clients aware of safety issues, that could and would affect the operation of the client’s facility.
