Security is essential to every individual or company. When it comes to occupation in security, it always comes to our mind the image of the ones wearing blue shirts standing at or around the main gates of companies. We can easily come across them everywhere. Familiar with us as they are, there still exists aversions and prejudices towards the security guards. What are the reasons? Are there any difficulties or secret stories behind them? Let’s explore them in this article.
About security industry
A security guard is responsible for ensuring security as well as preventing potential crimes in the security sites. Security guards may be responsible for protecting the public and personal property, and even human life. In fact, security guards work at various sites:
- Fixed assets
- Warehouse and seaports
- Schools, hospitals, buildings, companies…
- Personal bodyguard
- Others (as per the client’s request)
We are more and more familiar with security guards, whom we may come across everywhere. However, not everyone shows affection towards the ones working in this field.
Security jobs are thought to be for the illiterate
There is no such thing as a meaningless job. Security is neither unjust nor illegal. But when it comes to security guards, many people look down on them and even consider security is for the illiterate.
We can easily encounter security guards at the security sites such as schools, supermarkets, hospitals, etc. When on duty, they often sit at the patio umbrellas or security booths and rarely do anything. Because of that, security jobs are thought to be easy and do not have too many requirements. The label “the illiterate” or “the lazy” are also attached to them. Pathetically, the security guards are looked down on, disrespected, or even offended as people who are poorly educated and just want to do easy things.
However, a person’s education is shown not only through diplomas or degrees but also in behaviors and attitudes. Whatever career you pursue, obeying the law and being responsible for what you do are the very things to respect.
A prime example to prove this misconception wrong: a well-educated office worker tends to become a security guard to earn more money in his or her retirement. That means these security jobs are not for the illiterate only.
Compared with the highly educated people who make use of their education to circumvent the law and profit for themselves, are these things worth cherishing?
Does a simple job add value to society?
Security jobs may be seen as simple and not have too many physical requirements. But they still add value to society.
Security guards are responsible for guaranteeing safety and security in our daily activities. Without them, we will not be able to work and do business with peace of mind. Security guards play a very important role in our life.
Everyone from different ocupations will perform their own duties or mission. No existent career, especially recognized by law, is useless. All occupations have the dedication of employees and brings their own benefits for the comprehensive development of society.
Difficulties of security jobs
They are known as those who ensure the security and order of this society. The job that does not have too many physical and cognitive requirements. But that does not mean that security jobs don’t have any pressures and difficulties. Every career has its own peculiarities. So what are the difficulties for the security profession?
- Face the risks and dangers directly. This is considered a high-risk career after the police and soldiers. In the worst scenarios, the security guard is always someone who has to take all the blame to protect the property and people where they work.
- Working hours are not fixed. Unlike other careers; security guards have to work on night duty even when the others are still sleeping, have to work on national holidays, etc. It’s compulsory in many professional environments. While others are enjoying a good time with their family; the security guards have to work to ensure the peace and joy for them.
- Affect health. Due to the characteristics of the job, working in the rain may be inevitable. Because of that, this will definitely directly affect the health of the security guards.
Respect us – the security guards
Every occupation is useful and adds certain values to society. There is no such thing as an occupation for the illiterate or the lazy. Because each person will have different responsibilities with the work they are in charge of. They all need respect and equality in life. Therefore, security is no exception.
So let’s have a comprehensive view before criticizing or judging the job of those who “have to be awake while others are sleep”.
