Leadeship plays an essential role in all professions or specializations. Machines and equipment also need people to operate them. It is impossible for a business or an organization to operate with only one employee. When an enterprise or organization has 2 or more people, it must have a leader. Depending on the scale and size of each enterprise, the number of leaders may vary. And the security industry also needs the leaders. They are called ‘security manager‘.
To establish a good team, there must be good managers and leaders. There are professions that need a lot of human resources, such as the security industry, the more they need good leaders and managers. Managing people is already difficult, so managing security is even harder? Let’s find out together with PMV Security in this article.
What is ‘security manager’ ?
“Security manager” is a term used in the security industry and often referred to as “Commander”. This commanding job is naturally a leadership role. Depending on the position, the manager may be responsible for many or a few security personnel. ‘Shift leader’, ‘Team leader’, ‘Area Manager’, ‘Department head/deputy head’, ‘Branch Manager’ or ‘Director’ are examples of positions referred to as ‘Security Manager’ or the commanders. Some commanders simultaneously manage multiple security sites within an area and work with many clients in their managed area, known as ‘Regional team leader’, ‘Area commander’, ‘Zone commander’, etc depending on how the company uses the nouns.”
HR Management
It’s often said that managing humans is the most difficult task. It’s because humans have emotions such as happiness, anger, love, hatred, greed, flattery, and envy. Today they may feel comfortable, but tomorrow they could be uncomfortable. Today they may be a very good person, but tomorrow they can suddenly become a bad person.
Managing people in general and managing security staff in particular are not necessarily the same. In regular businesses, a manager may hold various roles depending on the nature of the staff and their qualifications within the company. Managing personnel in other industries may be simpler because everything operates under a pre-existing management structure.

Security regulations
“The security industry does have regulations and rules, similar to security management. However, HR Department will only work with those who directly manage security personnel. These are the ‘security manger’, or so-called area managers, who directly manage security personnel within their designated regions, arranging and managing tasks as required by each security sites.
In this industry, the fluctuations in human resources for each objective are very complex. Therefore, security managers must constantly understand and arrange suitable work for personnel. They take care of employees’ mental health, ask and encourage them to understand their thoughts and aspirations.”
How to effectively manage the security guards?
Not all security guards have knowledge of the industry they work in. Some of them perform their duties very well, while others do not. There are conscientious and hardworking people, but also lazy and uncooperative ones. Therefore, for a security business to operate effectively, it still requires a good security manager.
A good security manager can build a good team with their efforts. The success of the team depends heavily on the manager’s contributions. Thus, a good security manager is someone who can bring all individuals together and work towards achieving common goals.
Security management methods
The main method of security management lies in the role of the security manager (area commander, followed by the team leader). To perform their management and operational duties effectively, an area commander must ensure the following factors:

Professional security services
- Understand their professional field and possess excellent vocational skills, knowing what tasks to do, how to perform them well, and training their security personnel accordingly to ensure successful completion of their important tasks, while earning trust and respect from their employees.
- Serve as a role model for all activities. A lazy and evasive commander cannot motivate and lead their staff to be self-motivated and competent. Conversely, if they are enthusiastic and responsible, their employees will be happy to follow. Therefore, security management must actively check, inquire, urge, direct, and guide its personnel.
- Understand the personality, attitude, thoughts, emotions, and aspirations of their staff, assigning tasks, arranging them, and handling issues according to what they can accept. Remember that rules are essential, but not all employees apply them equally. Utilizing people is just like utilizing resources!”
Applying diverse security management methods
- Must be able to flexibly apply management methods.
- Must know how to propagate and educate, introducing the company and its policies so that security personnel understand whether they are working in a reputable and safe place. From there, security personnel can know what benefits they will receive when working here, and if the policies are good, they will stay for the long term.
- Thoroughly understand the abilities and personalities of each security personnel to choose a suitable security site for them. Guide and giving their employees directions. If area managers see that their staff have better abilities than just being a security guard, they can orienate them to do other jobs, such as team leaders or bodyguards.
- Coordinate well with HR to accurately and efficiently manage personnel. As a manager, sometimes you need to be gentle and considerate. To respect and understand your security guards, they will work for you for the long term.”
